University students across the country completed 48 hours problem solving session or hackathon on Saturday to address different challenges related to the space issues.
United State-based National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) organised the event to inspire youths in space issues across the world, according to local organiser, BASIS.
For the sixth time in a row, Bangladeshi students participated in the space apps challenge under the supervision of the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS).
“We organise seventh edition of the event. For last two years, the hackathon held virtually amid corona pandemic. Bangladeshi students are contesting in 11 categories of the completion following Nasa guideline,” Ariful Hasan Opu, an advisor to the Nasa Space App Challenges, told the Daily Sun.
Some 125 teams from nine regions – Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Rangpur, Barishal, Khulna and Cumilla – participated in the competition simultaneously held across 251 cities globally.
There will be announced 18 winners from nine cities will be announced on Tuesday afternoon on virtual platform, according to the organiser.
“The winning teams will appear in global round virtually,” Opu added.
Bangladeshi students have been continued success to the global competition as Buet Zenith has been crowned the winner in the honourable mention category of the 2020 edition of the completion.
The project of Buet Zenith focuses on increasing satellite connectivity to humans through social platforms by using data from Nasa.
Earlier, Team Olik from Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) won the category title in 2018 edition of the completion.
Team 'Olik' won the award in ‘best use of data' category for the project of ‘Lunar VR’ that allows users to explore the landing site of Apollo 11.
The users of Luner VR also can orbit over the moon with LRO satellite, and observing eclipse from the lunar surface. The team collected 3D model and information from various resources of Nasa.
University Grants Commission (UGC) Bangladesh and Basis Students Forum are partners of the event in national round.
